03_East_Lansing_Fall_05The city of East Lansing in nestled in mid-Michigan, directly east of the state capital of Lansing, and is home to Michigan State University.  As of the 2000 census, East Lansing’s population was 46,525.

East Lansing was founded in 1847, the same year that Lansing was the designated as the state capital.  Michigan State University was founded 8 years later in 1855, and was established into East Lansing in 1857.

Downtown East Lansing centers around Grand River Ave., which is the dividing line between the city and the campus of MSU.  Michigan Ave., which leads directly to the Capital Building, divides the city and the campus further west.

East Lansing’s K-12 education is covered by the East Lansing School District, and has an enrollment of 3,400 students.  East Lansing School District consists of four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school.

The city is serviced by Amtrak trains, and Indian Trail and Greyhound buses out of the East Lansing Amtrak depot.  The Capital Area Transportation Authority services local bus routes in East Lansing and neighboring areas.  Three major interstates and one US highway intersect the city: I-96, I-496, I-69 and US-127.  Air travel to the East Lansing area is possible through the Lansing Capital City Airport.
