Not a bad week. I went 9-1, only missing the Purdue vs. Northern Illinois game. I am now 27-5 on the season. The weekly breakdown follows:
Temple at No. 5 Penn State
Line: Penn State -30
Prediction: Penn State wins 42-3
Result: Penn State wins 31-6
No surprise here, since the last time Temple beat Penn State was before the attacks on Pearl Harbor. The running game started to come together for Penn State, as Evan Royster rushed for 134 yards on 19 carries.
No. 8 Cal at Minnesota
Line: Minnesota +14
Prediction: Cal wins 38-17
Result: Cal wins 35-21
Minnesota played tough against the Golden Bears, tougher than the score shows. Adam Weber threw for for 226 yards, and Eric Decker went off for 119 yards and 2 receiving TDs, but you’re not going to win many games with only 37 yards rushing.
No. 11 Ohio State at Toledo (at Toledo?! Cleveland Browns Stadium)
Line: Ohio State -20
Prediction: Ohio State wins 31-10
Result: Ohio State wins 38-0
After Toledo put up 58 points against Colorado, the Rockets were held scoreless as Terrelle Prior showed that he can throw the ball as well as run the ball with 262 yards and 3 TDs through the air and .
Eastern Michigan at No. 25 Michigan
Line: Michigan -24
Prediction: Michigan wins 38-10
Result: Michigan wins 45-17
Eastern Michigan was able to make it a game for a quarter and a half, but the Michigan defense clamped down in the second half to keep Eastern scoreless.
Woffard at Wisconsin
Line: No line due to I-AA
Prediction: Wisconsin wins 31-7
Result: Wisconsin wins 44-14
Wisconsin was never in jeopardy of losing this game, but there are definite concerns for the Badgers. Namely the rushing defense, which gave up 214 yards to Wofford, and the rushing offense which fumbled the ball six times, losing three of those fumbles.
Northern Illinois at Purdue
Line: Purdue -13
Prediction: Purdue wins 31-21
Result: Northern Illinois wins 28-21
Oh the bipolar disorder of the Purdue Boilermakers. After RB Ralph Bolden went off for 357 yards rushing in the first two games, he was held to just 64 yards against Northern Illinois.
Michigan State at Notre Dame
Line: Michigan State -10 1/2
Prediction: Notre Dame wins 24-17
Result: Notre Dame 33-30
I’m not sure anyone really knew what to expect with MSU coming off a loss to Central Michigan the week before. But MSU fought hard, and despite falling short to the Irish in South Bend, have emerged as one of the more explosive passing offenses in the conference. The loss to Notre Dame really shouldn’t have surprised anybody, but now a win against the Wisconsin Badgers is Madison will be critical.
Indiana at Akron
Line: Indiana +5 1/2
Prediction: Indiana wins 27-17
Result: Indiana wins 38-21
Indiana were 5 point dogs to the Zips, but Akron suspended their quarterback a few days before the game and probably should have been considered the underdogs after that. The Hoosiers are 3-0, but I’m not sure I see three more wins on the schedule to make them bowl eligible.
Arizona at Iowa
Line: Iowa -5 1/2
Prediction: Iowa wins 31-24
Result: Iowa wins 27-17
The Iowa defense looks stout, and appears as though they will be one of the toughest teams in the Big Ten, although they’ll face Penn State to open conference play, so we’ll see how good they really are right away.
Northwestern at Syracuse
Line: Northwestern -4
Prediction: Syracuse wins 24-23
Result: Syracuse wins 37-34
The Fighting Greg Paulus’ finally came away with the victory in the Carrier Dome as Northwestern was finally exposed as being not as good as advertised.
