Today MSU released the stats from their second preseason scrimmage.
- Kirk Cousins – 6 of 13, 119 yards, 1 TD, 1 interception
- Keith Nichol – 7 of 14, 54 yards, 0 TD, no interceptions
In the first go around, Nichol had a clearly superior day compared to Kirk Cousins. This scrimmage looks like it was much more even, with Cousins coming out a shade ahead. When we look at the combined stats, Nichol continues to lead statistically but Cousins closes the gap slightly:
- Kirk Cousins – 19 of 43 (44%), 236 yards, 3 TDs, 1 interception
- Keith Nichol – 23 of 40 (57%), 295 yards, 3 TDs, 0 interceptions
Again, it’s still early, and today’s scrimmage shows that this is very much an even race. Earlier in the week quarterbacks coach Dan Warner said that the best test will be game situations. Scrimmages are the closest we are going to get to “game situations” until September 5th. But let’s face it, Montana State is going to be cupcake city. We could put B.J. Cunnngham at quarterback and probably win the game. Point is, there’s about a 99% chance that this thing will not be decided before the first game.
Meanwhile, running back Larry Caper was a stand-out today, with 14 carries for 68 yards and 1 TD. The previous scrimmage featured more of the other backs, although Caulton Ray mad an appearance in both scrimmages.
