Halftime Update from South Bend

Michigan State is up 17-16 at the half.

The offense looked good from the beginning, as MSU went with Kirk Cousins to start the game.  Keith Nichol came into the game for the fourth drive of the game, before Cousins came back into the game toward the end of the second quarter.  QB stats so far:

  • Cousins: 10-16, 107 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT
  • Nichol: 2-3, 17 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT

After Keyshawn Martin threw a halfback pass to Blair White for a touchdown, MSU went for the onside kick that just barely went past the 40 yard line, then bounced backwards and was recovered by MSU.  Last week I said that Central Michigan executed the best onsides kick I had ever seen, well MSU just topped it.

The defense looked shaky early, as Clausen threw a 52-yard pass on just their second offensive play of the game.  But MSU kept fighting, kept fighting, and eventually started to step up.

Pass protection has been pretty good so far, although the line has still had trouble opening up holes on a consistent basis for the running backs.  They look a little better this week, but still not what I would call consistent.

Notre Dame started to run the ball more in the second quarter, which was probably good news for MSU since Notre Dame was pretty effective throwing the ball.

Alright, sanity check. A little over two hours ago, the sky was falling and if we lost this game OMG OMG we’re going to lose 10 games this year!!!!!!1  But MSU has responded, despite playing pretty poorly in the first quarter of the game.  The defense has started to bend and not break, and the offense is clicking.  Unless we melt down in the second half, this much we know: Michigan State is still a good team.  Michigan State can still play with good teams.  The Central Michigan game was a tough loss, yes, but we can still play.  So let’s put that game behind us, and get ready for the nine that are ahead of us.  Go Green!
