Holy Helmet! MSU to Update Helmet Logo in April

Yep, that’s right, the MSU helmet logo is getting updated in April.

The new logo appeared in a filing on the U.S. Patent and Trademark office, and apparently has been the culmination of a two-year redesign project between MSU Athletics and top designers at Nike.

IMHO, the new logo looks more rounded and, well, frankly a bit garish. At first glance, I hated it (as I imagine most people will initially feel the same way). But after a couple more looks, I can see where it appears more aggressive.

One of the aspects that I liked about the old logo was that it seemed to be proportional to a person’s face, whereas the new one needs to be looked at more as though it’s really a helmet. As in, someone’s head has to fit inside the damn thing.

Honestly though, the biggest issue I have with it is that now I’m going to have to buy all new clothes.

Update #1: There’s a thread over at Spartan Tailgate with an email that supposedly is from the PR department at MSU. I’m not reprinting it here because I’m pretty sure that’s illegal, but click over if you want to check it out. Basically, the gist is that yes, this is the new helmet logo, and that it is part of a larger brand and identity project for MSU. No word yet on how many t-shirts they plan on selling as a result of the new look.

Update #2: I’ve put together a look back at some of the MSU helmet logos we’ve used in the past. Take a trip down memory lane and check out some of the great (and not so great) helmet logos of MSU lore.

Update #3: I’m hearing some people on the Twitterz say that the new logo is for Nike’s Urban Strike Attack clothing line (or something like that), although I’m skeptical about that after reading the leaked email from MSU that basically says MSU is going to do a whole refresh.

Update #4: Naturally, someone started a Facebook group called JUST DON’T – No new Nike-influenced Spartan helmet.  Join if you are so compelled.  Someone mocked up a version of the new helmet with the spaces in the part between the plume and the head part, see below:

Looks better than the new version at the top of the page, if you ask me.  I really don’t think the new version would look so bad, if there was a gradient applied to it.  But when it’s just a flat color, it’s just tough to get the perspective to see it more than kind of a cartoon-y looking thing.
