It started with the dismissal of Glenn Winston and Roderick Jenrette last week.
Today, a written statement from MSU said that Winston and Jenrette were in fact present during the Rather Hall altercation. In addition, eight more MSU football players were suspended from the team for their involvement in the incident. They are:
- WR Mark Dell
- WR B.J. Cunningham
- WR Fred Smith
- RB Ashton Leggett
- CB Chris L. Rucker
- LB Brynden Trawick
- NT Ishmyl Johnson
- DE Jamiihr Williams
In my opinion, these young men should be dismissed from the team permanently. Pending the conclusions from the investigation under way by MSU and Ingham County police, they perhaps should be dismissed from the university.
I supported the reinstatement of Glenn Winston at the beginning of the season, and I still feel that it was the right decision. Winston paid his debt to society, worked hard to stay academically eligible, and maintained his fitness so that he could still contribute at a high level physically. It would have been wrong to turn on the young man at the time.
However, I have to imagine that when the whole Glenn Winston #1 incident went down, Coach Dantonio used it as an example to the rest of the team that this cannot happen. Ever. Even if he didn’t explicitly make this clear to the team, there should have been no confusion, based on the sentence handed down to Winston alone, that this was beyond unacceptable.
Apparently, that signal didn’t come through loud and clear. Well, here’s how to comes through loud and clear…every player that was involved is no longer a part of the program. Glenn Winston’s second chance was everyone’s second chance. They were all on warning.
Dantonio needs to send a message that he isn’t Bobby Williams, and that he isn’t John L. Smith. Dantonio’s reputation is as a disciplinarian. It’s time for him to show us that side of him now, more than ever.
