Hmmmm intriguing question. But sorry, there are only two Spartys in the world. The statue, and the mascot.

The reason it is annoying is that the term “Sparty” has now replaced “Spartans” as the moniker for our school (Yes I graduated from MSU). I do not mind it as a nick name but it is no longer used in conjunction with the real name. You only hear “Spartys” anymore.

Yeah, I think it tends to irk people when it is referred to the student body + alumni base as a whole, although I have been called a “Sparty” by people before, just as an individual. I agree, it does sound awkward, but I’m usually called a Sparty by people who really have no affiliation with the school and probably don’t know much about MSU, so they think it’s cool/appropriate. But again, I find it strangely endearing, so go figure.

I never saw it as offensive or disparaging. I DO think it’s awkward to use it to refer to a single MSU student/alum. Sparty is the mascot or the school/team as a whole. If the football team wins a game, “victory for Sparty” sounds just fine. But saying “Javon Ringer was an amazing Sparty,” …it just reads and sounds strangely.

I’ve never understood why people get so annoyed with this. The media doesn’t say it to disparage us, it’s a nickname, just like Michigan gets called “Big Blue”.

I think a good alternative to Spartys (Sparties?) would be to just call us Spartans.
