MSU will play Florida Atlantic at Ford Field for the 2010 season.

We saw thing one coming down the pike a few months ago when Florida Atlantic indicated that their new on-campus stadium would not be completed for the early part of the 2010 season.  Today it was announced that the Spartans will play a neutral site game against Florida Atlantic on September 11th next season.  MSU currently has a home-and-home agreement with Florida Atlantic, and the fighting Owls came to Spartan Stadium for a monsoon during the 2008 season.

From MSU’s official website:

FAU, who will be hosting the event, will receive the gate proceeds from the Michigan State matchup to be put toward the funding of the anticipated state-of-the-art, on-campus stadium.

Probably a great move on the part of Florida Atlantic to host the game at a neutral site where they know they’re going to be able to sell a lot of tickets.  There’s really no reason why Ford Field shouldn’t be sold out for this matchup, and since FAU pulls in all the gate sales, one has to think this works out pretty well in their favor, even considering the travel costs for the Owls.

This means that MSU will play a total of 9 football games in the state of Michigan next year.  MSU normally plays seven home games per year (three non-conference games and four conference games).  For 2010, MSU will open the season with Western Michigan, followed by the game with FAU at Ford Field.  The Spartans then have three consecutive games at Spartan Stadium, facing off against Notre Dame, Northern Colorado and Wisconsin.  Then it’s off to Ann Arbor to face Michigan, before hosting Illinois, Minnesota and Purdue.
