Texas Tech football coach Mike Leach has been suspended for the Valero Alamo Bowl against Michigan State.

This just in from ESPN:

Texas Tech has suspended coach Mike Leach from all duties, including coaching the Valero Alamo Bowl, after receiving a complaint from a player and his parents.

Apparently the suspension stems from a complain by a player and his parents about the treatment of the player after he sustained some kind of injury.  Texas Tech will conduct a full investigation, in the mean time defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill will serve as interim head coach.

So apparently we’re not the only team with suspension problems going into the bowl game!  Err…I mean….

In the short term, I’d have to say multiple player suspensions probably has a larger effect on the likelihood of winning a bowl game than the coach being suspended, simple because the players have been executing the game plan all year long and by this time in the season they pretty much know exactly what they need to do.  In the long term though, having your head coach suspended is a serious black eye, and could potentially have a huge undermining effect on the program, especially when it comes to bringing in recruits.

Certainly not a good situation for Texas Tech and Mike Leach, especially after coach Leach gained notoriety for his off-the-cuff “Fat Little Girlfriends” comments after the Texas A&M game this season (video):
