Via ESPN:

Charlie is right about MSU showing up.  The Spartans really haven’t been taken to the woodshed by Notre Dame since 1993, when we lost 14-36.

There’s been a lot of talk going around about whether it’s Same Old Spartans (our own guest blogger Jeremy included).  Mike Trogan over at Gang Green says adds some perspective:

If you ask the national media, the answer is yes because it makes for an easy headline. If you ask Wolverine fans, it’s not a return because they never stopped being S.O.S. The truth is no one can be sure right now. This is the first bad loss of the Dantonio era and how this team responds will determine the direction of this program. If they lay an egg this weekend in South Bend, it’s back to Same Ol’ Sparty. If they bounce back and play a great game regardless of the outcome, then maybe not.

Mike’s right.  Even if we play well against the Irish and still lose the game, I still don’t think we’re ready to say S.O.S.

Case in point: last year the Iowa Hawkeyes opened the season with three victories against very suspect opposition (Maine, FIU and Iowa State).  Iowa then dropped the next three against Pitt, Northwestern and Michigan State.  It was starting to look like yet another mediocre season from Ferentz and the Hawkeyes.  But Iowa would rattle off five wins in the next six games.  They beat South Carolina in the Outback Bowl to finish the season 9-4, and were ranked #20 in the final AP and USA Today rankings.

Did the loss against Central Michigan sting?  Absolutely.  Would a loss against the Irish be disappointing?  Of course.  But will it be the end of the season?  No, there’s still at least nine games after Saturday.
