What We Learn From The Michigan vs. Eastern Michigan Game

As I sit here watching the Battle of Washtenaw County (otherwise known as Eastern Michigan vs. Michigan) I can’t help but wonder what we learn about U-M, and by extension, Notre Dame through this game.  So a couple of thoughts:

  • Eastern Michigan, I suppose, could be the best running team in the country.  Or, if that statement isn’t true (and if you didn’t pick up on the dripping sarcasm) then perhaps Michigan is an average to significantly-below average run block team.  I’m guessing it’s probably the latter.  Notre Dame ran for 154 yards against Michigan, if we have any run block at all, we should be able to improve on this.  Which may or may not matter, since we all know they want to attack through the air.
  • Not sure we are learning much about the Notre Dame passing offense. Eastern Michigan doesn’t strike me as a great passing team.  So although they have only thrown for 54 yards so far, I’m not sure it tell us much about Michigan’s passing defense.
  • U-M has only put up 68 passing yards so far against Eastern and hasn’t looked to terribly impressive with about 5:30 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.  And yet they threw for 240 against the Irish and completed nearly 70% of their passes.  The ND passing defense has been particularly bad in the 1st and 3rd quarters, so who knows, maybe we’ll be able to get out to an early lead by throwing the ball.
